Alexandrite

Alexandrite

Alexandrite is famous as a "color changing" gem. It appears somewhat green in daylight and red under artificial lighting. It is a variety of Chrysoberyl and was reportedly discovered in Russia during the 19th century. Created alexandrite is very common as natural stones are rare and expensive. Alexandrite is sometimes used for June's birthstone and has a hardness of 8.5.
